***The following is a guest post for Natural Beauty by Barbara Fix*** These days there is a wealth of information available regarding the benefits of antioxidants. Do the words “Eat Your Vegetables!” ring any bells? In all fairness, most of us owe our parents and grandparents an apology for pushing our carrots, broccoli, and tomatoes around on our plates in the hopes they’d somehow go away. The luckiest of us had an accommodating family dog, and from what the studies tell us about antioxidants found in many fruits and garden vegetables, it’s likely our pet benefited with less heart disease, cancers, reduced blood pressure, and the aging process was kinder to them as well!

We can make amends by growing a healthy garden from heirloom, heritage seed for the “super foods” that make up the vegetables and berries listed below. Hopefully, we may still share with our pooch, but the majority will make it from the fork to our mouths. Happy eating!

Berries such as *Blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, and *blackberries are rich in antioxidants, fiber, mineral and vitamins.

*Blueberries can delay the effects of aging.

*Blackberries contain ellgic acid that combats cancer.

Cruciferous vegetables such as cauliflower, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts can prevent cancer and they help to protect us against heart disease. They also contain andole-3-carbinol that breaks down estrogen, reducing the risk of breast cancer, and ovarian and cervix cancer.

Broccoli is considered a “super food” and contains beta-carotene, which helps prevent cancer and heart disease.

Tomatoes are another “super food” that helps prevent macular degeneration and cataracts, and helps maintain mental function as we age. Tomatoes contain lycopene, a relatively rare member of the carotenoid family that are twice as powerful as beta—carotene.

Men benefit from tomatoes by lowering incidents of prostrate cancer and they reduce lung, colon, and breast cancers. They also contain the antioxidant glutathione that helps boost the immune system.

Red Grapes in the form of red wine improves heart function by breaking down platelets and keeping blood vessels open and healthy. The resveratrol they contain helps prevent cancer, inflammatory disease, stroke, ulcers, and osteoporosis.

Garlic contains large quantities of antioxidants that help ward off cancer, heart disease, and the effects of aging. It has also been attributed to improve blood clotting, and helps the effects of asthma, and yeast infection, and they contain anti-fungal properties.

Spinach contains lutin that improves eyesight and helps to avoid cataracts and macular degeneration. Studies reflect spinach may be helpful in fighting heart disease.

Tea has proven to help fight cancer, heart disease, cancer and stroke.

Carrots are rich in beta-carotene and help to prevent cancers, heart disease, and can slow the progression of arthritis.

Soy (think heirloom seed instead of GMO) helps prevent cancers, will lower cholesterol, and slows the advancement of osteoporosis and menopause.

Whole Grains are a great source of phytochemicals and they contain vitamin E that is shown to prevent cancers, boosts the immunity system, and slows the advancement of Alzheimer’s and arthritis.

Easy to use, wet hair--lather in hair well, place in shower cap and leave it for 30min. For really dry hair I would use this treatment a couple times a week, and remember not to shampoo this out. Smells kinda funky, I wish they would add in a fruit scent or something, but its not an overwhelming smell at least. One tub will last a long time so for the price it is a great investment. More efficient than the one time use hot-oils.

I don't know if it helps with growing my hair, but my hair is healthy and people always touch it and ask if it is real when I wear my hair out. First of all this castor oil has no smell, which is great. It leaves my hair moisturized compared to Jamaican black castor oil (lavender). I heard a lot of good stuff about the Jamaican black castor oil and decided to buy it. I hate the smell of the Jamaican black castor oil (lavender) it makes my hair stink. I have to overload my hair with sweet smelling leave-in creams & lotion to combat the smell. I don't like that distinct burnt smell. I'm currently using it on my scalp because I don't want to waste it. I can't wait to finish my two 8oz bottles. As soon as my other castor oil is done I will only use the Now foods castor oil. I think it is better because you can use it on your skin, smells better for the hair, and bath water. I guess me switching to the Jamaican black castor oil makes me know how much I love this brand better.

I came across a video by a lady on You tube who posted a video review on the Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil line with Olive Oil whose video was truly touching. (You can view it below) She revealed how her hair was falling out in hand-fulls after washes, and how terrifying it was for her to go through. My heart went out to her, because I too experienced something similar. I made some silly mistakes in the past bleaching and coloring my hair, that my hair finally gave up and started falling out. I found during this time when I had washed or brushed my hair, it would fall out in large amounts. It is a traumatizing experience to loose your hair, because you fear that you soon will become bald in a few washes. She found that the Organic Root Stimulator Hair Mayonnaise was the only product that built her hair back up, without having more hair loss occur. Organic Root Stimulator Hair Mayonnaise combines essential oils and organic amino acids, a blend of botanical extracts and herbs with whole egg protein and olive oil which is meant for REALLY dry damaged hair. It does moisturize over processed hair with essential oils, organic amino acids and Vitamin B5 for moisture and strength. The Hair Mayo was designed as a deep conditioner for fragile hair which is prone to breakage. This product line has received exceptional reviews especially with ethnic women. It DOES contain great organic ingredients, it really falls short when it comes to the preservatives. I list below some ingredients that are highly questionable in this product. At the same time, this product shows the rejuvenating nature of protein that is contained in eggs, and olive oil for restorative qualities that we should be considering in a deep conditioner.

Organic Root Stimulator Hair Mayonnaise

Organic Root Stimulator Line, while not marked for ethnic hair, has had excellent reviews from ethnic women. Many women claim that this conditioner is the best for deep conditioning, it can be recommended for all women for deep conditioning. Many ethnic women who have reviewed this product claim their hair grows after using this product. Although this product is not marketed for ethnic women in general, some women have reviewed this product to be too rich in oil making their hair seem greasy, leaving them draw the conclusion that it might be meant for ethnic hair. This product is very inexpensive, so do give it a try to see if it works for your hair.

When my hair began falling out, I found the only thing that worked in my hair was a cholesterol deep conditioner, by Queen Helene called Cholesterol. Having over processed chemically striped blonde hair, I needed a series of treatments for several months to restore my hair from a series of bad decisions. I found this treatment softened my hair, gave it some bounce and less hair fell out when I used the product.

Queen Helene Cholesterol Hair Conditioning Cream-DIRECTIONS: Shampoo hair and towel dry. Apply to hair and scalp. Make sure dry or damaged hair is well covered. Add a few drops of warm water and work into a creamy lather. Cover hair with a plastic cap, then cover with a heating cap or a hot towel. Keep on for 15 to 30 minutes. Remove cap and rinse thoroughly until all cream is removed. Do not shampoo.

What is the difference between a Protein and a Cholesterol Conditioner?

A protein conditioner like Organic Root Stimulator Line is anything that adds protein to hair. The ORS line adds egg protein and olive oil into their product to restore moisture. Words like "keratin" "mayonnaise" "egg" "collagen" "amino acids" are all ingredients that add protein into the hair.

A cholesterol conditioneron the other hand is also great for hair that is damaged from over processing. Cholesterol replenishes the moisture into dehydrated, damaged and brittle hair. Cholesterol contains lipoproteins which has a combination of fats and proteins. Hair lipids are made up of fatty acids which provide shine to the hair. Over Processing from chemicals, hair styling will make the hair lipids dull, dry and brittle. Cholesterol contain lipids that the hair needs if it is damaged.

One simple test is to take a piece of wet hair which has naturally fallen out, and pull on it steadily. What you can do is wrap both ends of the hair around your fingers and test to see if the hair stretches with a slight pull in both directions. If the hair stretches, but shrinks back when you let go, then most likely the hair has enough protein. If the hair stretches a lot, but then does not shrink back, it lacks protein. If the hair strand seems to stretch and break, (or simply breaks) then try both protein and cholesterol treatments.

Another simple test for damaged hair is to place a strand of hair in a cup of water for 2 minutes. If the hair is floating, then the hair is strong and a cholesterol conditioner can be used for good maintenance. If the hair sinks, it might be quite damaged and a protein treatment could be the first thing to start to recover the hair.

Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Creamy Aloe Shampoo provides hair with maximum moisturizers leaving it soft and more manageable.

The ORS (Organic Root Stimulator Line ) are labeled Organic, it also doesn't mean it doesn't contain some questionable ingredients. Some of these ingredients such as alcohol, parabens, sulfates, cones, linalool, petrolatum, prophylene glycol, cyclopentasiloxane are NOT GOOD for your hair. I am not a chemist, so I have a limited education with ingredients. Here is a list of the ingredients from the Organic Root Stimulator Line that were found to be very questionable:

Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate (is classified as expected to be toxic or harmful, noted to be harmful to the Organ system toxicity (non-reproductive), Irritation (skin, eyes, or lungs)

Disodiium EDTA ,( This agent has shown to have, endocrine disruption at high doses, Developmental/reproductive toxicity at high doses, cancer, nervous system effects, behavioral effect effects at low doses)

Cetrimonium Chloride ,(Cetrimonium chloride is a quaternary ammonium compound used as a preservative. Shown to cause cancer and allergies)

Cetrimonium Carboxydecyl ,(Dimethicone is a silicone polymer)

Polyquaternium-10 (is a synthetic polymeric)

Propylene Glycol has shown to cause cancer, and has limited evidence of respiratory toxicity

Propylene Glycol has shown to cause cancer and has limited evidence for respiratory toxicity

Sodium Laureth Sulfate Human irritations in the lungs, skin and eyes

Triethanolamine is a strongly alkaline substance used as surfactant and pH adjusting chemical. Known to be a respiratory, skin and immune system toxicant. Also causing cancer

Methylparaben - DMDM hydantoin is an antimicrobial formaldehyde releaser preservative. In the U.S., approximately 20% of cosmetics and personal care products contain a formaldehyde-releaser.

Propylene glycol is a small organic alcohol commonly used as a skin conditioning agent

Directions

Wet the hair thoroughly. Apply a generous amount of Olive Oil Creamy Aloe Shampoo and work into a rich lather. Rinse hair thoroughly. Repeat shampoo, leaving on the hair for 2-3 minutes before rinsing Rinse hair thoroughly and towel dry hair.

Place a plastic cap over the hair and sit under a warm dryer for 10-15 minutes or leave on the hair for 45 minutes to 1 hour without heat. Rinse thoroughly.

TiyeR -I have relaxed hair and I deep conditioned my hair with this the day before I went to the hair salon so I wouldn't have to pay for a deep conditioning there. This did a wonderful job. I left it in my hair for about an hour and my hair was extremely soft and so easy to comb through once I rinsed it out. I didn't dry my hair; just twisted it and undid the twists the next morning. Super-soft. So when I got my hair done at the salon, the end result was really moisturized, soft and healthy hair. This is great for African American hair, natural or relaxed.

I used this conditioner for the first time, and I can honestly say it's great. I washed my hair and applied this product and sat under my hooded dryer for 30 minutes. When I rinsed it out of my hair, my hair felt like silk.After blow drying and flat ironing my hair feels so soft. So this will now be one of my staple products. Now on the other hand, my best friend used this product and says it left her hair feeling very thick and coated. Her hair is already thick so that's the last thing she needs. If you have fine, oily, or mix textured hair (as in you are biracial), you may want to try the pack first. This conditioner is heavily based from natural oils that will likely be too much for oilier hair types.

Con: the orange-y smell from the orange oil is a bit much (smells like orange Ozium air freshener), but somewhat refreshing at the same time, if that makes any sense at all

I have very thick dry frizzy but fragile hair and this conditioner has made all the difference. It truly restores moisture to your hair and especially good if u have damaged hair. It's a protein/moisturizingmix that smells like oranges (so if you hate oranges, you might want to stay away. I will say the smell doesn't linger though.) I've been bouncing between relaxers, weaves, short straight cuts, and everything in between. This has become my go to conditioner. It leaves my hair soft enough to feel good, but not so limp that I can't do anything with it. It works on all textures in my family. My mother has very coarse hair and uses it, my grandmother and aunt have very fine hair, and they like it as well. I don't recommend leaving this conditioner, or any conditioner, in your hair for a very long time because it will dry your hair out. I like to sit under the dryer with a shower cap for about 15-30 minutes, and rinse. It's helped with tangles in weave and in my real hair, and I've used it to soften up my hair while removing braids. Definitely a 5-star product.

I suffer from Atopic Dermatitis and sometimes my scalp can get so dry that my hair suffers the consequences. I decided to give this product a try along with the Mane N Tail Shampoo/Conditioner/Detangler (for my method see my review on those products) which I purchased the same day. These products compliment and work together really well. My hair is now softer, EVEN shinier like when I was a kid - before I started messing with hair products. Since I am trying to grow my hair longer, at least five inches more as noted in my other reviews, I am taking Biotin which I upgraded to 5000mcg a day. Some people claim it works really well for their hair, and others say it was not as great as an Organic product should be. Some of the easier organic cosmetics such as foundation, eye shadow and blush are relatively easy to find in a natural blend, but it is the mascara that has been increasingly harder to find. Out of all the cosmetics, you would think we would take extra precaution to what we apply next to our eyes, but most don't give it an extra thought. I know I haven't for so many years, but as we are seeing so many family and friends develop health issues at younger ages, you start paying attention.

The Answer For Stubborn Eye Wrinkles

Eye wrinkles can be the number one visual indication that someone is ageing and sadly often times eye wrinkles are very premature and come WAY before their time. The worst thing about eye wrinkles is they are almost impossible to get rid of. What works? I went to a dermatologist, and he showed me I had severely dehydrated skin. I tried the eye creams he recommended, and drank more water, and they softened a little bit, but the results fell quite short of a major difference. Recently, my wrinkles have reduced by a fraction of 70 % and I will tell you what I did:

I have been a coffee drinker since the age of 16, and I have to say I REALLY enjoy coffee. Living in Seattle, the coffee hub of both Starbucks and Seattle's Best, everyone here is a coffee drinker. Americans and Canadians love their coffee. I really started to fall in love with coffee when I moved out on my own and started using cream. As you put into your body MORE natural vitaminsand natural herbs (which detox the body), EVENTUALLY you will feel more energized and at a natural state after your body expells the toxins. You will find the same with fasting. As you begin to fast, your body starts to rid it self of toxins, and a person will find they will feel tired, and have headaches, because so much toxins are leaving at once. I noticed this for several months when we would fast weekly. Eventually as you fast more often, and reduce the toxins into the body these symptoms will go away, and the body starts operating at a normal state. So at first your body may go through a battle, and the symptoms of that battle will be felt, but stick it out. YOU WILL see the benefits.

There is nothing wrong with drinking moderate coffee. ALTHOUGH, keep in mind the average person doesn't drink the recommended levels of caffeine. Every has to weigh benefits of caffeine and outweigh the potential risks.

You may want to experiment with tea samplers to see which type of Herbal tea you enjoy the most.

I have been impressed with Yogi, and Traditional Medicinal as their teas seem to be more intense and can be used more than once. I tend to re-use my old tea bag with a new one. I have Enjoyed the Breath Deep by Yogi as the Licorice is quite intense.

I have tried the Yogi Get Regular Herbal Laxitive. I would highly suggest experimenting with it on your days off to understand how it will effect your body. At times I have used this tea and have had cramps before having a BM. I haven't experienced diarrea on this tea, but abdominal cramping.

I am looking forward to trying Yogi Skin DeTox, and Yogi Egyptian Licorice. I have not enjoyed the teas that have ginger. Like everything you do have to experiment to see what you like and dis-like.

- Mix 1 egg, 2.5 tablespoons milk powder and 1 tablespoon wheat germ oil and massage it into the scalp. Leave it on for 30 minutes and wash.

- Massage almond oil on scalp 2-3 times a day, daily. This has also proven to be great to prevent further hair loss.

- Apply a paste of hot olive oil, honey, and 1 teaspoon cinnamon powder before bath and keep for 15 minutes.
