Oregon OSHA tested more than 100 samples and there were samples with readings higher than OSHA standard.

Soap/Body Wash

People like to have clean bodies, which is why soap and body wash are some of the most popular personal hygiene products today. To make your own soap at home, all you need is 2 cups of glycerin soap base, 2 tablespoons of shea butter, and 10-20 drops of your favorite essential oils. Just melt the glycerin soap base and shea butter separately. You can use a double boiler or microwave for this step. Just remember to keep heat to a minimum and stir your ingredients every few seconds using a metal stirring utensil. When both have been heated, combine them and add your favorite essential oils. Mix well, pour into soap molds, and allow your soaps to cool. When they have cooled completely, they are complete.

Some folks prefer body wash over soap. If this sounds like you, you can easily make your own body wash at home. All you need is one cup of liquid castile soap, 1 teaspoon of xanthan gum, and 10-15 drops of your favorite essential oil. Just mix all of your ingredients and your homemade body wash is ready to use. Store your body wash in a tightly-capped bottle.

Shampoo

Since most folks like clean hair, shampoo is also a very widely-used personal hygiene product. To make your own shampoo, just mix 1/4 cup distilled water, 1/4 cup liquid castile soap, 1/2 to 1 teaspoon jojoba or grapeseed oil, and a few drops of your favorite essential oils. Mix all of your ingredients in a tightly-capped bottle and shake well. Remember to shake before each use, as this homemade shampoo is much thinner than normal shampoo. Do not worry about the thinness; it lathers very well and produces excellent results.

Deodorant

Deodorant is a very important personal hygiene product, as it helps prevent body odor. Unfortunately most deodorants on the market contain harsh ingredients that can cause irritation. You can easily make your own powdered deodorant at home using 1/2 cup baking soda, 1/2 cup cornstarch, and 5-10 drops of antibacterial essential oils, such as lavender or tea tree. Simply mix your dry ingredients in a jar and stir in your oils until the mixture is thoroughly blended. Gently apply to underarms with a cotton ball as needed.

Toothpaste

A clean mouth is also a top priority for most people, making it easy to understand why toothpaste is another important personal hygiene product. To make your own toothpaste, just mix 2/3 cup baking soda, 2-4 teaspoons of fine sea salt, and 10-15 drops of peppermint or spearmint essential oil. You can use 1-2 teaspoons peppermint extract instead of the essential oil if you wish. Add a few drops of water to the mixture until your desired consistency is reached. Store in a lidded container and use like any other toothpaste. If the toothpaste tastes too salty, reduce the salt content or omit the salt all together. Although it is not a necessary component, it does provide increased scrubbing power.

Silicone is a chemical that acts like a film that is spread onto the skin to prevent moisture evaporation.  Think a rain proof tent, or plastic wrap over your skin.  The biggest claim most companies proclaim loudly is the fact that the molecules in dimethicone are too large to penetrate into the skin layers.  Silicone simply rides on the surface of the skin and and remains flexible.

While some say silicone soaks up the excess oil on your skin, others claim that silicone holds the oil under the layer of silicone so you don’t notice it so much.

Many proclaim that silicone based foundations do not cause acne, and are ideal for troubled or mature skin because the molecule size of silicone is too big to clog a human pore.  While silicone doesn't penetrate the skin, they also don't allow the skin to breath.   While they keep in the moisture they also lock in the bacteria.

Is This A Risk You Want To Take?

A study published in the Journal of Applied Toxicology in 2004 expressed concern regarding the use of paraben preservatives. In the UK, researchers found traces of it in 19 out of 20 women with breast tumors.

The New Scientist published a study that speculates that Parabens are also one of the causes of breast cancer in women.

"Preservative chemicals found in samples of breast tumours probably came from underarm deodorants, UK scientists have claimed.Their analysis of 20 breast tumours found high concentrations of  para-hydroxybenzoic acids (parabens) in 18 samples. Parabens can mimic the hormone estrogen, which is known to play a role in the development of breast cancers. The preservatives are used in many cosmetics and some foods to increase their shelf-life."

One of the recent studies in June 2011, Korean scientists from Chungbuk National University investigated the xenoestrogenic activity of a panel of parabens (methyl-, ethyl-, propyl-, isopropyl-, butyl-, and isobutylparabens) in animal pituitary cancer cell line.   Not only did they find that parabens act as hormone mimickers in breast cancer, but also trigger the genes that are involved in breast cancer formation.

Bottom Line- Try to switch over to as many organic products as possible.  The other day when I was in a drug store, they didn't have any organic hand creams, so I bought a 9 dollar bottle of another kind.  I think to myself, I could have bought an organic brand for close to the same amount.  It was just that they didn't carry any organic brands in the store.  What was I thinking?  The fact is when you go shopping, the organic brands aren't widely available.  Stock up on amazon and ebay, where the prices are still competitive.  Try to stock up on your supplies so you don't fall into the same trap I did.

Consider ordering some deodorant that is all natural.  Out of all the brands, I have found the Crystal brands to be most effective.  How they work, is you dip them under water, and wipe them under your arms.  Several years ago, I tried it, and ditched my regular Aluminum deodorants for these crystal deodorants, and I found I didn't have any problems what so ever.  I found they had a roll on deodorant, and I love it.  Consider ordering this, and ditching your toxic metal deodorants.

The worst of all these chemicals are the metals that are found in our cosmetics.  Mercury, arsenic, lead, aluminum and cadmium are neurotoxins found in fish, lipstick, old paint, batteries, microwaves and lightbulbs.  The heavy metals cause Alzheimer's, neurological disorders, arrhythmia, developmental and learning disabilities in children, low birth weight, and decreased white and red blood cell production.

VOCs, volatile organic compounds, are commonly found in house paint. These air pollutants work like a gas. Formaldehyde, Toluene and Benzene are all VOCs. Stearalkonium Chloride-This chemical is used in hair conditioners and creams. It causes allergic reactions and as it is cheap, and also used in fabric softeners, it is easier
for companies to use rather than spending the money on plant based ingredients
which are deemed expensive, even though the natural products really do boost
hair and skin health.

Mineral Oil-Petroleum by-product that coats the skin like plastic, clogging the pores. Interferes with skin's ability to eliminate toxins, promoting acne and other disorders. Most people already understand that an adequate intake of water is absolutely essential for good health.  Water helps the body to carry out essential metabolic processes and allows it to efficiently eliminate waste.  Despite its importance, however, few of us actually drink as much water as we should.  Nutritionists used to recommend eight full glasses of water each day; this works out at 64 fluid ounces.  Today, however, health experts are advising people to drink an ounce for every two pounds of body weight.  By that formula, anyone who weighs more than 128 pounds should be drinking more than eight full glasses.

To maximize health outcomes, your water intake should consist of pure water.  A sugary soda or even a diet soda is not an adequate substitute.  It is also important to ensure that the water you drink does not contain trace elements of contaminants such as lead, mercury, or bacteria; these can negatively affect health.

Eating right, exercising regularly and taking the appropriate vitamins and mineral supplements are also important general strategies for improving your health.

Eating right

Most people in industrialized nations consume far too much meat and not enough fruit, vegetables and wholegrains.  Ideally people should have at least nine servings of plant-based food each day; five vegetable servings and four servings of fruit are often recommended as a good balance.

Stretch marks are small, recessed lines in the skin. They usually show up on the belly towards the end of a pregnancy. It is at that point that the belly quickly expands to make room for the baby. Some women also get them on their buttocks, thighs, hips, and breasts.  These annoying stretch marks are the result when the supportive tissue under the skin begins to change. The skin breaks because it can’t stretch in the same direction as the skin tissues. This means that the collagen is unable to keep its elasticity. About 50 percent of all pregnant women will get stretch marks but it is impossible to predict who will get them and who won’t.

Over the years there have been stretch mark creams developed that can reduce their appearance. But ultimately wouldn’t it be better to help prevent them or try to keep them to a minimum than to try to get rid of them after the fact?

The best way to fight stretch marks is to make sure that your skin stays as elastic as possible during your pregnancy. Here are some of the best ways to make that happen:

Dr. Leslie Baumann, director of the University of Miami Cosmetic Group, suggests using moisturizers that contain cocoa butter or shea butter as their main ingredient. Apply the product three or four times a day and rub it deeply into the belly, breasts, hips, and buttocks.

3. Since the elastin fibers and collagen in the skin are what keep skin that grows rapidly stay firm, it follows that the stronger they are, the less apt they are to break and result in stretch marks. Because of this, the American Pregnancy Association (APA) recommends eating foods that contain a lot of Vitamin E and C as well as silica and zinc. These are the things that help collagen form.

Vitamin C in particular can help keep tissues from becoming damaged since it is one of the most important antioxidants. Vitamins B2 and B3 are also known to help keep up healthy skin.

4. Pregnant or not, it is always important to drink plenty of water every day. It helps to refresh the skin and make it stronger.

5. Exercise can also help with the prevention of stretch marks. Not only will it keep the weight gain under control, it improves blood circulation. Good circulation is another key to keeping the skin more elastic and stretchable when it grows. Better circulation will also lessen the chances of swollen ankles and varicose veins while pregnant.

Exercise has the added benefit of improving your level of energy, it keeps the mood swings to a minimum, helps you sleep better, and improves your self-image. These are all things that are important for a pregnant woman.

1. Visualization -- That's right. Exercise is about working out those muscles and your heart, but it all starts with the mind. When you start to get that familiar feeling to skip out on your fitness program today, visualize yourself and how you will look and feel by keeping at it. Use the power of the mind to see the person you want to be in your mind, and then remember that exercise is the only way to achieve your goals. Also, visualize the good release of endorphins that comes with working up a good sweat. Remember the way you feel after you are done and the sense of accomplishment. Use this mental imagery to make you skip the easy chair and get moving.

2. Reward yourself -- Make a habit of treating yourself to something you really enjoy when you complete your day's exercise goals. Now, of course, you don't want this to be something so terrible that it completely defeats the purpose, but still, have something that you reward yourself with. Don't let yourself have it unless you get your exercise in. Over time, the reward itself can be motivation enough to make you want to get your workout in.

I don't know if it helps with growing my hair, but my hair is healthy and people always touch it and ask if it is real when I wear my hair out. First of all this castor oil has no smell, which is great. It leaves my hair moisturized compared to Jamaican black castor oil (lavender).   I heard a lot of good stuff about the Jamaican black castor oil and decided to buy it. I hate the smell of the Jamaican black castor oil (lavender) it makes my hair stink. I have to overload my hair with sweet smelling leave-in creams & lotion to combat the smell. I don't like that distinct burnt smell. I'm currently using it on my scalp because I don't want to waste it. I can't wait to finish my two 8oz bottles.   As soon as my other castor oil is done I will only use the Now foods castor oil. I think it is better because you can use it on your skin, smells better for the hair, and bath water. I guess me switching to the Jamaican black castor oil makes me know how much I love this brand better.

I made some silly mistakes in the past bleaching and coloring my hair, that my hair finally gave up and started falling out.

I found during this time when I had washed or brushed my hair, it would fall out in large amounts.  It is a traumatizing experience to loose your hair, because you fear that you soon will become bald in a few washes.

 She found that the Organic Root Stimulator Hair Mayonnaise was the only product that built her hair back up, without having more hair loss occur.  Organic Root Stimulator Hair Mayonnaise combines essential oils and organic amino acids, a blend of botanical extracts and herbs with whole egg protein and olive oil which is meant for REALLY dry damaged hair.  It does moisturize over processed hair with essential oils, organic amino acids and Vitamin B5 for moisture and strength.

The Hair Mayo was designed as a deep conditioner for fragile hair which is prone to breakage.   This product line has received exceptional reviews especially with ethnic women.

It DOES contain great organic ingredients, it really falls short when it comes to the preservatives.  I list below some ingredients that are highly questionable in this product.   At the same time, this product shows the rejuvenating nature of protein that is contained in eggs, and olive oil for restorative qualities that we should be considering in a deep conditioner.

Organic Root Stimulator Line, while not marked for ethnic hair, has had excellent reviews from ethnic women.  Many women claim that this conditioner is the best for deep conditioning, it can be recommended for all women for deep conditioning.  Many ethnic women who have reviewed this product claim their hair grows after using this product.   Although this product is not marketed for ethnic women in general, some women have reviewed this product to be too rich in oil making their hair seem greasy, leaving them draw the conclusion that it might be meant for ethnic hair.  This product is very inexpensive, so do give it a try to see if it works for your hair.

When my hair began falling out, I found the only thing that worked in my hair was a cholesterol deep conditioner, by Queen Helene called Cholesterol.  Having over processed chemically striped blonde hair, I needed a series of treatments for several months to restore my hair from a series of bad decisions.  I found this treatment softened my hair, gave it some bounce and less hair fell out when I used the product.

Queen Helene Cholesterol Hair Conditioning Cream-DIRECTIONS:  Shampoo hair and towel dry. Apply to hair and scalp. Make sure dry or damaged hair is well covered. Add a few drops of warm water and work into a creamy lather. Cover hair with a plastic cap, then cover with a heating cap or a hot towel. Keep on for 15 to 30 minutes. Remove cap and rinse thoroughly until all cream is removed. Do not shampoo.

A protein conditioner like Organic Root Stimulator Line  is anything that adds protein to hair.  The ORS line adds egg protein and olive oil into their product to restore moisture.  Words like "keratin" "mayonnaise" "egg" "collagen" "amino acids" are all ingredients that add protein into the hair.

A cholesterol conditioneron the other hand is also great for hair that is damaged from over processing.  Cholesterol replenishes the moisture into dehydrated, damaged and brittle hair.  Cholesterol contains lipoproteins which has a combination of fats and proteins.  Hair lipids are made up of fatty acids which provide shine to the hair.  Over Processing from chemicals, hair styling will make the hair lipids dull, dry and brittle.  Cholesterol contain lipids that the hair needs if it is damaged.

One simple test is to take a piece of wet hair which has naturally fallen out, and pull on it steadily.   What you can do is wrap both ends of the hair around your fingers and test to see if the hair stretches with a slight pull in both directions.  If the hair stretches, but shrinks back when you let go, then most likely the hair has enough protein.  If the hair stretches a lot, but then does not shrink back, it lacks protein.  If the hair strand seems to stretch and break, (or simply breaks) then try both protein and cholesterol treatments.

Another simple test for damaged hair is to place a strand of hair in a cup of water for 2 minutes.  If the hair is floating, then the hair is strong and a cholesterol conditioner can be used for good maintenance.  If the hair sinks, it might be quite damaged and a protein treatment could be the first thing to start to recover the hair.

Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Creamy Aloe Shampoo provides hair with maximum moisturizers leaving it soft and more manageable.

The ORS (Organic Root Stimulator Line ) are labeled Organic, it also doesn't mean it doesn't contain some questionable ingredients.  Some of these ingredients such as alcohol, parabens, sulfates, cones, linalool, petrolatum, prophylene glycol, cyclopentasiloxane are NOT GOOD for your hair.  I am not a chemist, so I have a limited education with ingredients.  Here is a list of the ingredients from the Organic Root Stimulator Line that were found to be very questionable:

Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate (is classified as expected to be toxic or harmful, noted to be harmful to the Organ system toxicity (non-reproductive), Irritation (skin, eyes, or lungs)

Disodiium EDTA ,( This agent has shown to have, endocrine disruption at high doses, Developmental/reproductive toxicity at high doses, cancer, nervous system effects, behavioral effect effects at low doses)

Cetrimonium Chloride ,(Cetrimonium chloride is a quaternary ammonium compound used as a preservative. Shown to cause cancer and allergies)

Cetrimonium Carboxydecyl ,(Dimethicone is a silicone polymer)

Polyquaternium-10 (is a synthetic polymeric)

Propylene Glycol has shown to cause cancer, and has limited evidence of respiratory toxicity

Propylene Glycol has shown to cause cancer and has limited evidence for respiratory toxicity

Sodium Laureth Sulfate Human irritations in the lungs, skin and eyes

Triethanolamine is a strongly alkaline substance used as surfactant and pH adjusting chemical. Known to be a respiratory, skin and immune system toxicant. Also causing cancer

Methylparaben - DMDM hydantoin is an antimicrobial formaldehyde releaser preservative. In the U.S., approximately 20% of cosmetics and personal care products contain a formaldehyde-releaser.

Propylene glycol is a small organic alcohol commonly used as a skin conditioning agent

Directions

Wet the hair thoroughly. Apply a generous amount of Olive Oil Creamy Aloe Shampoo and work into a rich lather. Rinse hair thoroughly. Repeat shampoo, leaving on the hair for 2-3 minutes before rinsing Rinse hair thoroughly and towel dry hair.

TiyeR -I have relaxed hair and I deep conditioned my hair with this the day before I went to the hair salon so I wouldn't have to pay for a deep conditioning there. This did a wonderful job. I left it in my hair for about an hour and my hair was extremely soft and so easy to comb through once I rinsed it out. I didn't dry my hair; just twisted it and undid the twists the next morning. Super-soft. So when I got my hair done at the salon, the end result was really moisturized, soft and healthy hair. This is great for African American hair, natural or relaxed.

Holmes- Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Replenishing Conditioner -I have been battling dry hair off and on for a while now due to going to school in areas with very hard water, but when I moved to go to an out-of-state school (harder water, still, in Miami), my hair seemed irreparable.It was so dry that I had to completely give up blow drying, my hair was falling like crazy when I combed it because it was so brittle and no amount of oil (natural or store purchased)or moisturizing sheen seemed to help. My scalp was flaking like crazy due to all of the dryness and I couldn't find relief. I had done everything I could. I got a shower filter in hopes that that would help, but it was only a minimal difference. I used the best conditioners, like Matrix Biolage conditioning balm and even resorted to homemade treatments like avocado and banana pre shampoo masks, but nothing moisturized enough. Many things would make my hair soft for a day or two, but it was still bone dry!

This is the ONLY product that actually gave me my hair back!! I can see a difference after one use and I have slip again! I combed my hair out with no tangles for once! I was able to actually do a good job on my roller wrap because my hair wasn't drying out before I could even section it off before beginning. This stuff is AMAZING! If you have fine, oily, or mix textured hair (as in you are biracial), you may want to try the pack first. This conditioner is heavily based from natural oils that will likely be too much for oilier hair types.

Con: the orange-y smell from the orange oil is a bit much (smells like orange Ozium air freshener), but somewhat refreshing at the same time, if that makes any sense at all

It's a protein/moisturizingmix that smells like oranges (so if you hate oranges, you might want to stay away. I will say the smell doesn't linger though.) I've been bouncing between relaxers, weaves, short straight cuts, and everything in between. This has become my go to conditioner. It leaves my hair soft enough to feel good, but not so limp that I can't do anything with it. It works on all textures in my family. My mother has very coarse hair and uses it, my grandmother and aunt have very fine hair, and they like it as well. I don't recommend leaving this conditioner, or any conditioner, in your hair for a very long time because it will dry your hair out. I like to sit under the dryer with a shower cap for about 15-30 minutes, and rinse. It's helped with tangles in weave and in my real hair, and I've used it to soften up my hair while removing braids. Definitely a 5-star product.

I suffer from Atopic Dermatitis and sometimes my scalp can get so dry that my hair suffers the consequences. I decided to give this product a try along with the Mane N Tail Shampoo/Conditioner/Detangler (for my method see my review on those products) which I purchased the same day. These products compliment and work together really well. My hair is now softer, EVEN shinier like when I was a kid - before I started messing with hair products. Since I am trying to grow my hair longer, at least five inches more as noted in my other reviews, I am taking Biotin which I upgraded to 5000mcg a day. Started Biotin this spring 2010,RD and my hair has grown considerably. Cheers.

Curls Curl Ecstasy Hair Tea Deep Conditioner by Curls, and claims to transform dry, damaged, chemically processed or overly stressed hair.

This product is meant for deep conditioning only, not just the quick 5-10 min conditioner we use in the shower.

Heat must be used to get the maximum benefits of this product.   The bottle comes with a fair bit of product and should last about 4 deep conditioning treatments.

Although this product was not made for African-American hair type 4b, it is marketed for those hair types.   The reviews on Amazon are mixed.  Some people claim it works really well for their hair, and others say it was not as great as an Organic product should be.  T Crunch left an interesting comment on amazon "Quaternium 15 is a formaldehyde releasing preservative, meaning it dissociates to formaldehyde when mixed with water. Not a good choice in preservatives and frankly amazing that high end conditioners go cheap and toxic on preservatives"

It still works great andis probably the best conditioner I've found for my curly hair hair (3b) I'm a product junkie and I find it works well with just about everything I've tried. Sometimes I even use a little bit as a leave in for the flyaways on the crown. Side note: I got mine before they changed the bottle design and from my experience the pumps don't work so well.

Eye wrinkles can be the number one visual indication that someone is ageing and sadly often times eye wrinkles are very premature and come WAY before their time.   My first eye wrinkles started in my late 20's and over the years they got deeper and deeper.  I tried the cheap eye creams, and spent the money on expensive creams also, and nothing seemed to work.  I found that most creams just plump the skin for a couple hours but the wrinkles still remain after the skin cream wears off, and the wrinkles are just as deep after a couple hours.  The worst thing about eye wrinkles is they are almost impossible to get rid of.  What works?  I went to a dermatologist, and he showed me I had severely dehydrated skin.  I tried the eye creams he recommended, and drank more water, and they softened a little bit, but the results fell quite short of a major difference.    Recently, my wrinkles have reduced by a fraction of 70 % and I will tell you what I did:

I have been a coffee drinker since the age of 16, and I have to say I REALLY enjoy coffee.  Living in Seattle, the coffee hub of both Starbucks and Seattle's Best, everyone here is a coffee drinker.  Americans and Canadians love their  coffee.  I really started to fall in love with coffee when I moved out on my own and started using cream.  A bit later I purchased my first espresso machine and fell in love with lattes with the thick cream content.

-If you're trying to loose weight, coffee has been shown to cause weight gain since insulin's message to the body is to store excess sugar as fat.  Caffeine increases the risk of long-term weight gain by increasing stress hormones and creating a risk for hypoglycemia, which stimulates appetite. Although caffeine can assist with short-term weight loss, in the longer term, heavy consumption is more likely to lead to weight gain.

- Caffeine  elevates your heart rate and blood pressure.  The more coffee you drink the more these levels increase.  Over time, as your body gets used to caffeine, it needs higher amounts to get the same effects.  This may be the reason why espresso machines are so popular.  Having your body in a state of emergency all day long isn't healthy.  In addition, long-term deep sleep is affected.  If a person drinks a cup of coffee with 200 mg of caffeine at 4PM, by the time 10PM comes, they will still have about 100mg in their body. By 4AM, they still have 50mg in their system, and in a few hours they are ready to put their body in a state of alarm again.  Not only do they miss the benefits of deep sleep, but their bodies are in a CONTANT state of emergency.
