Achieving the 1940's waves of the past are easier than you think. There are several ways of achieving this look. If you have longer hair, to cut the time in half, put your hair in hot rollers, so you can achieve the fullness of this look. When your hair has set, take them out, and brush out your hair. Next, you want to take a curling iron, and basically form letter "c" waves through your hair. You want to flip the curling iron upside down to begin with, and insert your hair but do not wrap your hair around the barrel. You are basically just going to creating a curve in the hair , but not a curl. Next,.........
do the very same step below the last curve in that section but turning the barrel iron upside down, - opposite. As you work down that section of hair, you will end up with a wave. If you add hair gel (and blow dry it ) before you put your hot rollers inyou will find the wave stays a lot better. This is a lot of time but it looks dynamite, and I have used it in many beauty pageants.

Second, you can take the easy way out and get a three barrel curling iron. I lived in a small town and couldn't find them anywhere so the first one I came across was 120. I paid it and now I see you can find them on ebay for 20. I have not seen a curling iron with large three barrels, but just smaller barrel curling iron. This is a very easy way of getting those waves. It is quick and simple, and stunning!
For shorter hair try pin curles. Gel your hair and form your hair into waves using bobbi pins. You can get a spectacular look with simply forming the hair with your fingers.
